Types of Implants

Dental implants are the best way to replace the missing tooth or teeth. Basically, there are three types of dental implants

  • Endosteal
  • Subperiosteal
  • Zygomatic

However, the zygomatic dental implant is very rarely used and is very complex.

Endosteal: It is the most commonly used dental implant and is safest among all the others. It suits almost all the patients but it requires a healthy and strong Jawline for the post to fuse to. These follow the surgical method to implant directly into the Jawbone. They are placeholder posts that are shaped like screws and are put into the place where the false teeth are fitted. Once the surrounding gum tissue heals, the false teeth can be placed on the post to fit and connect the original implant.

Subperiosteal: This is another type of dental implant and is an alternative to Endosteal Implants. In this type, instead of fitting the implant on the jawbone, it is rested on the top of the bone but still below the gum tissue. These consist of metal frames placed under the gum with the post attached to it. The gums around the metal frame heal holding it in place and the false teeth are now secured to the poles of the gum.

Zygomatic Implants: These types of implants are the least commonly suggested and available for you. This procedure is very complex and must be done only if you don't have enough jawbone for the Endosteal implant. Instead of the jaw bone, the implant is placed on the patient's cheekbone. It is highly risky and is suggested only if there is no option for the above two implants.
